Cooperate with God’s grace? Is it possible? We’ve heard the scripture verse, “My grace is sufficient for you…” but how do we do this in a practical way? In this episode, we will explore the ways we work against the Father, and how much easier it is to just listen.

Many times children rebel against their parents, sometimes it is overtly but many times and the most insidious is when it is not as evident. They give lip service with a yes, but instead, their actions say no. Are we similar to the children who say yes to God but don’t follow through with the actions required for a solid relationship with the Creator-God?

God the Father has always fascinated me. He walked in the garden with Adam and Eve. He spoke truth and love and kindness and they, who had witnessed perfection in their world and with their maker turned their backs on Him. how does that happen? Sure, we all know the story of the temptation but how does one get tempted? How do we allow ourselves to fall into that path where temptation comes along and we do not recognize it for what it really is, sin.

Recently our pastor and I spoke about this issue and he distilled it down to a simple fact, that while Adam and Eve walked with God their relationship was lacking because if it was strong and solid they would not be in a place where temptation would work, and they would have used the words of Jesus, later when Peter tried to spare him his cross, “Get behind me Satan.”

Paul says in 1 Corinthians 12: 1-12 and especially in verses 9-10 that Jesus gave us a grace that is sufficient and when we realize his power is made perfect in our weakness we can reveal our true selves to him and that is that we are nothing alone.

But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. 10 That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.”

For when I am weak then I am strong … this is a contradiction in our minds but it means we are letting go and letting God. We are standing beside the cross with Him, but he is doing all of the heavy lifting. When we are down, depressed, angry, frustrated, and just under a burden that we can not lift, we must cooperate with our Lord and Savior.

Let me spell it out to you.

  1. Do we believe? Do we have the faith that withstands the daily temptations in our lives?
  2. Are we distracted by all of the things that bombard our lives?
  3. Do we have the peace that surpasses all understanding or are we afraid?
  4. Do we have the moral fortitude and the will to turn off the things that rob us of our peace?
  5. Do we go to God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit and ask for that infilling of the fire of Pentecost to come into our lives and strengthen the bond and relationship with our Maker our Creator, Our Savior, and His Spirit?

Are we unruly children who work against God’s grace instead of with and in cooperation with God’s grace? And, that is the issue, many times we continue to think we are with God when indeed we are for ourselves and our own ideas.  I’ve realized that the only way to stay grounded is to spend time with God, going to daily Mass helps me but it is just the beginning. When I leave the doors of the church am I still in prayer, and I still looking and seeking Him in a relationship all day long? I pray this for all of us, and that the infilling of the Spirit of God remains in you and you in Him.

Let’s Pray.

Dear Heavenly Father, I yearn for a deeper relationship with you. I ask you Lord for the grace to see things as you see them and to open my eyes to the truth of your love for me. Please Lord give me an infilling of Your spirit to renew and sanctify me so that I can repent from my sins and look to you for salvation. I pray for the following intentions if it is within your Divine Will… and I pray this in Jesus’ precious Name. Amen.
