Faith is a gift from God that we can use to overcome our fears. It isn’t always easy, but we have many examples of faith around us and in scripture. Right in the beginning of Genesis, Abram is an example of faith in God, indeed it says in Gen 15:6, “Abram put his faith in the LORD, who attributed it to him as an act of righteousness.” We too can put our faith in God no matter what is happening around us.
When we have struggles and concerns, do we try to solve them, or do we worry instead? God gave us the mental capacity to think and find solutions to our problems. Sometimes though, we give in to our fear that we can’t solve the problem, or we think we are not capable. Call on God, turn to scripture, listen to praise music – give in to your faith. And when you do, God will see and give you more faith!
In Matthew 8, the apostles are at sea and a storm comes up while Jesus is sleeping. When they wake him up, he has stern words for them before he solves the problem, “He said to them, “Why are you terrified, O you of little faith?” Then he got up, rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was great calm.” (Mt 8:26) Jesus is right beside us, even if it seems as if he is sleeping. By keeping our focus on him fear cannot take hold of us.
Like the sign in my friend’s house said, “Faith and Fear cannot live in the same house.” Let faith overcome fear, not the other way around. Hold onto the faith God has given to you, ask for more, rely on it and you will grow stronger in your faith, better able to withstand the storms of life.
This week, spend some quiet time asking God what your fears are and to replace them with faith!
