Why Parish Life Matters: Finding Strength in Catholic Community

Have you ever felt like you’re walking through your faith journey alone? Many Catholics wrestle with that feeling—especially in a world that doesn’t always understand or support our beliefs. But the truth is, God never intended for us to live our faith in isolation. From the earliest days of the Church, community has been at the heart of Catholic life.

Parish Life is More Than Sunday Mass

It’s easy to think of a parish as just the place we go for Sunday obligation. But your parish is much more—it’s the living Body of Christ in your neighborhood. It’s where we come together for the sacraments, yes, but also where we find encouragement, accountability, and belonging.

Why Community Matters

Spiritual Support: When life gets hard, parish friends can lift us in prayer and remind us of God’s presence.
Faith Formation: Bible studies, catechesis, and parish events help us grow in understanding and love of God.
Service Opportunities: A parish connects us with chances to serve the poor, volunteer, and live out our faith in action.

The Domestic Church Needs the Parish

Our homes are the “domestic church,” but the parish is where those homes come together. When families gather at Mass, share meals, or celebrate feast days, we strengthen our identity as Catholics and pass the faith on to the next generation.

In this episode, Michelle Seghers, International Event Coordinator for Magnificat, and mother to nine children and grandmother to twenty grandchildren, discusses how she began a relationship with the Lord at an early age. Michelle grew up in a loving, faith-filled home where nuns and priests were always welcome. She credits those early, happy experiences with giving her a solid foundation in the faith.

In addition to sharing several “God experiences,” Michelle also discusses:

The importance of daily prayer and communication with God
The reasons behind her decision to homeschool her children
How she and her husband, Jimmy, met
The challenges they faced in choosing to live in obedience to God
