Is Spiritual Direction for you?

What is Spiritual Direction?

“It is the guidance of a person into a life truly under the dominion of the Holy Sprit, who is the primary director.”
from Seeking Spiritual Direction by Thomas Dubay, S.J.

“Spiritual direction is concerned with helping a person directly with his or her realtionship with God…the most fundamental issue is that relationship and its underlying questions: “Who is God for me, and who am I for him?”
from The Practice of Spritual Direction by William A. Barry & William J. Connolly

What is the purpose?

Just as we seek help in other areas of our lives, why not do the same for our spiritual life? Direction provides a time and space to learn how we can know, love, and serve God more fully and deeply in our life.

What happens in spiritual direction?

Listening to the directee (the person seeking direction), prayer, quiet, deep conversation, being open to the Holy Spirit, spiritual growth, affirmation, and transformation all occur during both the prayer time before a spiritual direction appointment and during the time the director and directee are together.

Of course, they don’t necessarily happen all at once but occur over time as people grow in their relationship with God.

Episode #13

Do you have a blueprint for making decisions? You should, because all of us make decisions 24/7 – but how often do we take our decisions – even if they are small to the Lord in prayer? In this podcast, I discuss a blueprint for making decisions with prayer.

a few minutes with God

Decision making is always tough, but sometimes, for the little things, in particular, we often put God in a box, and don’t want to “bother Him” with the little things or we feel it is too silly to ask. Nothing is too little or too big for our God – He is the Almighty One – ready to hear the prayers from the hearts of His children. How many of you pray for a parking spot? I know I did and even had my children join in prayer. What a wonderful example of the power of prayer and the power of asking God for everything, every decision.

Today we will discuss those prayers that involve making a decision. I believe this is a blueprint that will help you tremendously. I will share in podcast 14 a more in-depth prayer blueprint for making major decisions through prayer.

Blueprint For Making Decisions

  1. Pray specifically for a need.
    • Of course, God already knows but it helps us to fine-tune our ask
    • Shows us whether a decision is necessary or not
  2. Give it to the Lord – and do not dwell on it further.
    • Allowing God to be God of every aspect of our lives
    • Giving it to the Lord allows us to release our needs into His hands
    • Accepting God’s will in our life
  3. Read Scripture –
    • Daily, and when in prayer for a decision more often
    • Listen after you pray
  4. Pray specifically for your needs and ask the Lord to give you the gift of knowledge about what to do.
    • Gifts of the Holy Spirit are many, ask for specific gifts
  5. Our subconscious listens and often when we are in tune with God
    •  Ideas will come into our minds, miraculously
    • We can pray and think about those ideas.
  6. Write anything down that comes to you.
    • Journal ideas as they come
    • Write down pertinent scripture verses
  7. Look into your options
    • Being informed is important.
    • Research your options
  8. Pray about any thoughts that come to mind and ask the Lord to confirm these.
  9. Do you have peace of mind?
    • Peace about a decision is a sign from the Lord that it is right.
    • If you are stressed or agitated keep praying!
  10. Make a decision.
  11. If you can’t make a decision… wait!
    • Pray and continue to read scripture.
  12. Once you make a decision trust in the Lord and give it to Him.
  13. Ask the Lord to go ahead of you and prepare the way.
  14. Give all the glory and praise to God!

Remember, this is only a blueprint – you can never put God in a box, He is worthy of all the glory, honor and praise – we are only His instruments. Use this blueprint to help you in your decision making and often it will just come naturally. Reaching out in prayer is a sign that you are open to God’s will in your life. I pray the Lord blesses you in your decision making and helps guide you on your path!
