Homeschooling 101

A Production of the Ultimate Christian Podcast Network.

The Working Woman Radio Show decided to do a special podcast episode called Homeschooling 101 to aid parents with helping their children learn at home.

Because of COVID-19, business, as usual, has ceased, and millions of parents and children are home trying to figure out what to do for school.

Although schools are doing their best to keep the learning going for students, most school systems were not set up to instruct students virtually.  Many of them are still trying to figure out how to do this. Parents are in a panic and find themselves scrambling to engage and educate their kids.

Angela Paul, a math and science teacher, tutor, and former home educator, joins me in the studio for a special homeschooling session. As former homeschoolers, she and I discuss various activities, that parents can do for math, reading, writing, science for each of the grade levels.

More About Angela Paul

Angela Paul is the Chief Operating Officer of Math Plus Educational Services. Mrs. Paul has tutored and taught math and science for over 30 years. Mrs. Paul was educated at MIT and Georgia Institute of Technology  where she obtained a master’s degree in chemical engineering. She has taught at both the secondary and collegiate levels. Angela is also the founder and former director of the Northeast Independent Preparatory Academy. As the former NIPA director, she was instrumental in helping hundreds of home-schooled students get into college for almost 20 years.

Homeschooling 101Download books from the NYPL for free

There’s good news for all the New York City-based e-bookworms out there. The New York Public Library has an app that allows anyone with a library card (and an iOS or Android phone) to “borrow” any of the 300,000 e-books in the collection.

It’s called SimplyE and will allow you to read books on your phone, but beware, there might be a waitlist for some popular titles, including the Game of Thrones series. (Check out the Harry Potter books, quick!)

The Northeast Independent Preparatory Academy

The Northeast Independent Preparatory Academy is an association of homeschooling families who wish for our children to have diplomas recognized by the state of Georgia.  In the summer of 2000, nine families joined together to seek accreditation from the Accrediting Commission for Independent Study (ACIS).  We were granted acceptance on our initial application and screening. In July of 2005, we were granted accreditation through the Georgia Accreditation Commission (GAC), the premier statewide accrediting body.

Homeschooling doesn’t have to be expensive. High-quality homeschooling resources are available at no cost to anyone with access to the internet.

1. Khan Academy

Khan Academy has a long-standing reputation as a quality resource in the homeschooling community. It is a non-profit educational site started by American educator Salman Khan to provide free, quality educational resources for all students.

Organized by topic, the site includes math (K-12), science, technology, economics, art, history, and test prep. Each topic includes lectures delivered via YouTube videos.

Students can use the site independently, or parents can create a parent account, then set up student accounts from which they can track their child’s progress.
