Testimony of Amy Del Valle
Testimony of Amy Del Valle. Amy Del Valle grew up in New York in a culturally Jewish home. She was the oldest of three children and had a younger sister and brother. Family life was very dysfunctional. Her parents divorced when she was 8 yrs. old and there was a long custody battle. Her mother remarried hoping for a better family life but the stepfather was very abusive to her brother and sister. Amy tried her best to protect them. She spent much of her time at a friend’s house when they lived in Staten Island to get away from her unstable home life. The family was very kind to her, and she felt loved and accepted in their Italian Catholic home.
When Amy was in high school, she worked in her stepfather’s Dry-Cleaning business and would remain there to eventually to manage the store for many years after. It was through work that she met her future husband, Peter. He was a non-practicing Catholic. They were married by a Catholic priest that intertwined the Jewish and Catholic traditions in the ceremony, to appease both sides of the family. Their faith journey began together, and they became the parents of two daughters. They looked for a new church and found the Lutheran Church to be the best option as their daughters went to preschool there. They felt pulled back into the Catholic church once the daughters were old enough to receive the Sacraments. They became very involved in the new Catholic community. Amy became a Lector and Cantor and Peter became a Deacon. They knew they were home at last.
