On this episode of the Understanding Catholicism Series, our presenter, James Seghers, delves into how Christ, through the Sacrament of Confirmation, sends us an outpouring of the Holy Spirit.

The Sacrament of Confirmation is the second of the three sacraments of initiation. This Sacrament completes the Sacrament of Baptism and unites the confirmed more perfectly to the church, which is Christ’s mystical body. James explains how, through the Sacrament of Communion, Jesus marks each confirmed Christian with the “seal” of the Holy Spirit, empowering Christians to be faithful witnesses of Christ. James relays the story of the beautiful St. Agnes of Rome, who became a virgin martyr because of her commitment to Christ.

Additionally, James relays the characteristics of this unique “seal” — our belonging to Christ, a permanent enrollment to receive Christ’s services, and gives Christians a promise of divine protection and the final trial at the end of time. The confirmed person also receives the power to boldly proclaim faith in Christ publicly with courage.

James discusses several instances of how the Sacrament of Confirmation was foretold in the Old Testament. In the New Testament, Jesus proclaimed, “And when they bring you before the synagogues and the rulers and the authorities, do not be anxious about how you should defend yourself or what you should say, for the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say.” (Luke 12:11-12).

James continues that with free will, the confirmed can either receive or block God’s grace and explains how when we are open to the Holy Spirit, this Sacrament roots us more deeply in divine affiliation, unites us more fully in a loving relationship with Christ, increases the gift of the holy spirit, renders our body with the church more perfectly, and provides a spirit of strength.

This is the 9th Episode in the (20 Episode Series) of Understanding Catholicism.
