Top Five Tips for Lent
In Matthew 16:26 we read for what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? I’m going to share my top five tips to really think about these 40 days leading up to the time that we celebrate the Resurrection, on Easter! Do you look at this time with great introspection?
I mean, what else do we ever have the time or luxury to really think about our lives and where we are going? I used to hate plans. I used to hate to have goals. And the reason for this was that I am a pretty competitive person. Mostly against myself. And so I always felt if I can’t win, I’m not even going to participate. And it was a horrible attitude to have, right? That’s why I didn’t like to play games.
I didn’t make goals because I could possibly fail. What a horrible way to live and think. And it wasn’t until I got older and really took a look at why don’t I like doing these certain things or why was I not setting goals, I realized it was a self-defeatist attitude. Lent is one of those times for me, and it is a time to really delve into the scriptures. It is a time to really go into prayer. It is time to really give my life to the Lord in a renewed way. And so I hope it becomes that time for you as well.
Five Tips for Lent:
- Prayer and contemplation. You know, it’s taking that few minutes with God. Be quiet before the Lord. Even if you don’t hear anything, open up the Bible and you read the Scriptures, that’s the Word (God) talking to you.
- Forgiveness. Making atonement or amending relationships. Unforgiveness can cause us to be held in bondage. A tool the enemy uses is this unjustice. You know, that’s not fair. I can’t believe that person did this to me. Or you know, whatever that is, let go of that guilt. Let go of that unforgiveness. Let go of whatever that is and just pray blessings upon the person that irritates you. P
- Say no to whatever “that” is in your life. What is that thing in your life that is again holding you down? You know, it can be a giving up something like a piece of chocolate or dessert or foul language.
- Giving, your time, talent and treasures. What are those things, those gifts that you have? For me, time is very, very precious. My time is one of those things that I just hoard. And so during this Lenten journey, during this time of lent, I am going to give my time, talent and treasures. And for me it’s actually going to be teaching a class online. And while it’s a topic I love, just the time it took to put it together was a labor of love to help other people. And so whatever that is, whether it’s visiting family in the nursing home, or just visiting with a neighbor.
- Spiritual growth. It is that time to, you know, get into the Word, to read a book that may be sat on yourself shelf for a year.
Let’s Pray.
Dear Lord, help me, help me in my unbelief. We all struggle at times my God really focusing on You and really seeing clearly the path that you have opened for us. And I just ask you my God to shine a light upon our path, to help us with our focus, to give us clarity, to give us a vision, to give us that joy of life that you want for us, that you so abundantly want to give us. And I pray, Lord, that you help me during this journey to focus on the things that you want me to see. I just praise you and I thank you for all things. My God, I asked you to help me to focus and be thankful, and I would like to lift up the following needs and prayers… And, I pray this in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
