Prayer Partner Defined

So, what is a prayer partner? As you can imagine it is a person you can pray with from time to time or even daily for the needs of those closest to you or for the needs of others. Typically it is one person instead of a group of people. This can be someone you know from church or a friend. It can even be your spouse. This person should be someone who is close to God or who wants to grow closer to God.

Why should you have a prayer partner? It isn’t necessary but it is nice to have someone to lean on and help you through a rough spot. Matthew 18: 19-20: “Again, truly I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything they ask for, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven. For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.”

What a wonderful promise! God created us as social beings and he even honors and gives grace to us when we partner in prayers.

A prayer partner is someone who:

  1. Is available to pray via the phone or in person.
  2. Is not a gossip
  3. Is not judgmental
  4. Is someone who can keep a confidence
  5. Is someone who is faithful and follows God

While there are no rules to praying with a prayer partner for me the outline below helps tremendously since it is not a time for visiting with a friend, which can actually come later after prayer. Some people don’t want a spouse as a prayer partner and would rather have a friend. It is whatever you feel comfortable with as well as the other person.

  1. A place that is quiet and you won’t be interrupted.
  2. Reverence, going before the Lord takes a time of praise and worship, praying something like this, “Please Lord help to clear my mind of the busyness of the day and help me to focus on you.” I also begin to pray in the Name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, the Trinity.
  3. Thank the Lord and praise Him. In worship, we can be in the presence of Almighty God.
  4. Sometimes I pray Matthew 18: 19-20 – and then each person takes a turn in lifting a need or petition. It may be a prayer for someone else or yourself. Let your needs be known. At this point you do not need a bunch of details – God knows. You can ask specific, like for a healing or a general, “Please Lord I pray a blessing on ___ as she graduates please provide a job and help her in her new journey.”
  5. Does something come to mind that might be helpful in this situation or is God leading you to another way to pray – speak it out and ask, “Lord I’m not sure if this is from you but please provide…” Or you might feel the Lord is prompting you to pray a specific way.
  6. End with thanksgiving and praise once again.

This is a thumbnail or a brief outline and you can pray in any way you want to – sometimes there is not time to go through each stage and it might be a quick text to your prayer partner asking for a specific prayer request. Many of us are on prayer chains where we get requests from people in need and many times we get so many emails we are unable to pray for each and every one. We pray a generalized prayer for those needs daily – and that makes having a specific person to pray with so important.

Your prayer life will grow as well. And, your prayer partner may change over time. I’ve had various prayer partners over the years and some close friends that I can text for prayers. I have a Facebook Page, A Few Minutes with God with the intent of those in need of prayers. I get notifications and pray!

Prayer, in general, keeps us grounded and it gives us the hope that is in Christ to overcome the evils of this world. Let’s pray!

Dear Lord Jesus, I thank you for reminding us that where two or more are gathered in your Name, you are here in our midst. I praise you and thank you for being here always for us. Thank you for providing for our needs and helping me to grow in my love for you. I see that through prayer I feel closer to you and I thank you for this. I also ask specifically for the following needs: Thank you, my God, for your provision for your Divine Will and for the grace you give me each and every day. And I pray this in Jesus’ Name, Amen.
