Theme: Rise, Walk, and Run: Becoming the Good Samaritan

Presider: Most Reverend David L. Toups, Bishop of the Diocese of Beaumont

In this moving conclusion to the conference, Bishop David Toups presides over the Sunday Eucharist, centering his homily on the profound call of the Good Samaritan. Drawing from the Gospel of Luke and the first reading from Deuteronomy, Bishop Toups challenges us to move beyond “ignoring” those on the peripheries and instead to adopt the “Holy Spirit heart” of Christ.

He shares vulnerable, personal stories—from his own moments of missed connection to his ministry in the Diocese of Beaumont and recent mission work in Cambodia—to illustrate that the Word of God is not “too mysterious or remote,” but is already in our hearts, waiting to be lived out.

Key Takeaways

  • The Anatomy of Compassion: Bishop Toups breaks down the actions of the Good Samaritan: having an open heart, approaching the victim proactively, and practicing “sacrificial generosity” by pouring oil and wine to heal.
  • Seeing Christ in the “Least”: A reminder that Jesus is both the Samaritan who rescues us and the “man left half-dead” on the side of the road. To serve the lonely, the immigrant, and the suffering is to minister directly to Christ.
  • The Power of Recognition: Sometimes, being a neighbor is as simple as acknowledging someone’s human dignity—a smile, a prayer, or a moment of eye contact can be a profound act of mercy.
  • “Go and Do Likewise”: The Mass ends not with a conclusion, but a commission. We are called to “rise, walk, and run” into the world to be the hands and feet of Jesus.

Notable Quotes

“The Gospel should sting all of our consciences… Jesus is showing us how to live and how to love.”

“Treat them with the human dignity that they deserve… Have the heart and mind of Christ at the store, on the road, at work, and in our ministries.”

About Magnificat® Ministry

Founded in 1981, Magnificat®, A Ministry to Catholic Women, an international nonprofit with over 70 Chapters across the globe, exists to evangelize and encourage Catholic women to grow in holiness through opening more fully to the power and the gifts of the Holy Spirit. “My Soul Magnifies the Lord,” recorded in Luke 1:46, is the beginning of Mary’s response to Elizabeth’s joyful greeting. The entire scene of the Visitation is the inspiration for this Ministry. Through quarterly gatherings that include a Chapter Meal, praise and worship, guest speakers proclaiming their testimonies as to how God has transformed their lives, and other faith-sharing experiences organized in a relaxed social setting, women (and men) are inspired and encouraged to grow in faith through the power of the Holy Spirit.
