Magnificat® Proclaims Ep 7 – Testimony of Jan Tate: Living the Call of Catholic Marriage

Jan Tate shares how God united her Catholic faith and 53-year marriage into a ministry that forms engaged couples and inspires families to holiness.Magnificat® Ministry Presents Magnificat® Proclaims, Episode 7 – Jan Tate

Magnificat® Ministry Presents Magnificat® Proclaims. In this episode, Jan shares how the Lord has enabled her to serve Him by combining her two great passions in life: her Catholic faith and her Sacramental call to Matrimony.

A native of New Orleans, Jan graduated with honors from Loyola University with a degree in Communications. She has been married to Lloyd Tate for 53 years. They have five children and 18 grandchildren.

Growing up in a loving Catholic home, Jan’s parents were role models, instigating Jan’s desire to emulate a life dedicated to faith and marriage. Jan praises the Lord for continually placing people and events in her path to ignite this passion for faith and marriage. She discusses how we must confront and “heal” negative patterns and beliefs and how human chords—living as part of the Body of Christ—are essential; we all need one another to make “God come alive” daily.

Jan is a trained spiritual director on the Archdiocese of New Orleans staff. She and her husband, who are authors of the In-Home Marriage Preparation manual used by dioceses and Catholic parishes, preach and hold couples’ retreats to prepare engaged couples for marriage in the Church.

Magnificat® Proclaims is a platform for inspiring testimonies that showcase God’s goodness, greatness, and grace in our lives. These testimonies not only inform and educate but also encourage and inspire us to develop, deepen, and cultivate our relationship with the Triune God. The show hosts are Monique Moussot and Maryann Ridini Spencer.

About Magnificat® Ministry

Founded in 1981, Magnificat®, A Ministry to Catholic Women—an international nonprofit with over 70 chapters worldwide—exists to evangelize and encourage Catholic women to grow in holiness through opening more fully to the power and the gifts of the Holy Spirit. “My Soul Magnifies the Lord,” recorded in Luke 1:46, is the beginning of Mary’s response to Elizabeth’s joyful greeting. The entire scene of the Visitation is the inspiration for this Ministry.

Through quarterly gatherings that include a Chapter Meal, praise and worship, guest speakers proclaiming how God has transformed their lives, and other faith-sharing experiences in a relaxed social setting, women (and men) are inspired and encouraged to grow in faith through the power of the Holy Spirit.

Rest and Renewal in Ministry, Eucharistic Congress 2024

On July 17 to 21, we celebrated the National  Eucharistic Congress in Indianapolis, Indiana. I was able to go with my husband and a friend. It was an amazing time, filled with learning, prayer, music, excellent talks, and seeing friends. We picked a track ahead of time and it was the Ministry track, for those who work in service to the Church in some way or another. Since my husband is a deacon and I am a spiritual director, this seemed like a good fit.

A few highlights:

spiritual directorstanding outside our hotel, when all of a sudden, the people I know from CatholicMom.com are walking by and Allison Gingras, calls out, “Deanna, is that you?’
Praying in Adoration every night in a stadium with 50,000 Catholics and the only sound was the hum of the air conditioner running.
Also, the priests who led us in Adoration were amazing. The reverence and awe for Jesus was present on their faces.
Hearing Fr. Boniface Hicks pray the Litany of Healing and Repentance in the Eucharist.
Matt Maher leading us in worship on Saturday night.
And the closing Mass with Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle

All of this was amazing and gave me a renewed sense of mission and purpose.

What did we do all day?

Each day we went to Mass at Lucas Oil Stadium. Then we went to a specific track for 3 days. John and I went to the Renewal sessions geared toward those in ministry. And those are the takeaways I want to discuss today.

Day 1, Danielle Brown from the USCCB

Instead of working in ministry, first pray, fast, and be purified.
Activities in ministry can become false idols.
Ministry not nailed to the cross will be blown away at the first storm.

Day 2, Damon Owens

God reveals things to us that are delightful and painful.
No one likes healing, but we like to be healed.
Holiness is being fully human.

Sara Kaczmarek

Work with God, not for him.
Find God in the quiet and stillness

Day 3, Julianne Stanz, author with Loyola Press

Bread that does not rest does not rise and neither can you.

Thanks to all who listen, comment, share it with friends and leave reviews.

The Suscipe

Suscipe

This prayer is from St. Ignatius of Loyola. It appears in week four of his Spiritual Exercises.  Suscipe means “receive” in Latin.

Why pray this prayer?

It helps us surrender all the “shoulds’ in our lives to God. We ask for his grace and strength to live our lives in the way it best serves him.
