The Working Woman Radio sits down with Ms. Jannquell Peters, former Mayor of the City of East Point, to discuss the importance of women in politics.

Ms. Peters was elected 33rd Mayor of the City of East Point on December 3, 2013.  Mayor Peters is an attorney, entrepreneur and small business owner. Before taking public office, Jannquell held a variety of positions working with the underrepresented, providing a voice to those without. She has served as a mediator, public defender and a child advocate attorney—the position where she currently serves and represents abused and neglected children and families in foster care.  

 

On this episode, we will discuss the gender biases and double standards that women face as elected officials and political leaders. We will also talk about the day in the life of a political candidate. Finally, we’ll explore ways on how women can balance work and family in a male-dominated field.

Prezi

Prezi allows you to create presentations using a large canvas format, as opposed to traditional slideshows. The service allows for zooming in and out of images, which they say is a more natural and effective way to communicate ideas. Prezi is available as a desktop, iPad, or “Meeting” account, which allows you to work on and share presentations with others in real time.

A free account allows you to create presentations and download them, while paid accounts of $59 or $159 per year offer other features such as the ability to make presentations private, work on a Prezi offline, or receive more storage space.

CoolText generates logos and other graphics for free. After you submit a form describing the kind of logo you need, CoolText custom-generates one. You can also create buttons for use on a website. CoolText hosts the images online and provides an HTML code to link to. The site also offers more than 1,200 free fonts.

While you may want to hire a professional graphic designer for your main company logo, this can be a great way to make quick logos for campaigns or individual promotions. It can also help you get started if you simply don’t yet have a budget for your startup. This service is completely free.

Google Docs

Google Docs is a completely free online spreadsheets and document management tool that comes with your Gmail/Google Account. The spreadsheet feature (which doesn’t quite have all of the features of Excel) is particularly useful when you need to have multiple people working on the same spreadsheet at the same time (something you can’t do with Dropbox). It’s also very useful for collaborative editing of documents (including text files). There have been massive improvements to Google Docs in the last year (e.g. offline editing) and it looks like it will only get better in the coming years.

The “glass ceiling” is a metaphor for the invisible barrier that prevents some people from rising to senior positions in the workplace. Every day across America, women experience sexism and inequities that that their male counterparts do not face. Additionally, women of color have the extra burden of racial discrimination.

Workplace discrimination is a difficult thing to tackle, but it’s not impossible. Emmy Award-winning journalist and Atlanta Mommy blogger, Joyce Brewer and I, talk about some things that women, specifically women of color, can do to push past the “that’s just the way things are” mentality and smash the “glass ceiling”.

In our interview, we will discuss the psychology behind the “glass ceiling” mindset,  the “micro-aggressions” that women of color face when they try to climb the corporate ladder, and the actions that management can take to break with the status quo and dismantle the “glass ceiling” culture.

Welcome to The Working Woman Radio Show where we have real conversations about the unique issues working women face. I am your host Deanna Johnson Cauthen.

I’d first like to say that hosting this show is a dream come true for me. I am honored to have this opportunity to share some of my experiences as a wife, a mother, and a woman who has worked as an entrepreneur for the past 30 years. 

Secondly, you will not just be hearing from me. I will be interviewing women from a broad spectrum of the community. They, too, will share the wisdom that they’ve gained from their work struggles and successes.

Finally, I want to hear from you. The Working Woman Radio Show wants to know what your needs are as a working woman. We want to know about the challenges you face and the burdens you bear. On Friday, March 19, Deanna Johnson Cauthen, the host of The Working Woman Radio Show was awarded a commendation from State Representative Zulma Lopez for the work that she has done with the podcast in the community.

“I consider it a privilege and an honor to receive this award. It encourages me to continue to do the work to educate and inspire women in the community.
